Eagle Ray Project
An emerging initiative focused on observing, photographically identifying and better understanding eagle rays.

Why eagle rays
Eagle rays are graceful, wide-ranging animals that many divers encounter yet few of us really know. Learning to recognise them, and to observe how they behave, is a quiet way to build a deeper relationship with the ocean.
Photographic identification
Many eagle rays carry spot patterns on their backs that can differ between individuals. When photographs are collected and compared using appropriate scientific methods, this kind of identification may help document individual animals and, over time, their presence and movements.
Where we are now
The project is in its early stages. We are defining its approach, organising existing underwater photography and exploring how it could grow responsibly. There are no research results, partnerships or monitoring programmes yet.
Looking ahead
In the future we hope to work alongside researchers, divers and photographers who share an interest in these animals, always guided by sound methods and respect for marine life.

Eagle Ray Expedition 2027
17–25 March 2027 · Cozumel · Isla Mujeres
A participatory science programme with Cozumel Ocean Research, connecting Cozumel and Isla Mujeres in the Mexican Caribbean. Participants learn to observe eagle rays in their natural habitat, record sightings and collect photographs for photo-identification: comparing the spot patterns on their backs to recognise individual animals.
Learning continues out of the water, reviewing observations and the information collected alongside the research team. It is an opportunity to get closer to field research methods and understand how careful observation can support knowledge of marine life.
12 dives are planned, subject to weather, sea conditions, safety, permits and the expedition team's operational judgement. The animals live freely in the wild: sightings are not guaranteed.
Organised and sold by BuceoyViajes. Care4Oceans is an independent educational platform and does not manage bookings. Expedition details and enquiries are available on the organiser's website.
